Challenges for HR in Maintaining Best Practices

Speaker Spotlight with Lauraine Bifulco

PIHRA: What advice do you have for solo HR pros who want to be included in key decision making? How does an HR pro demonstrate the value they bring to the company as an HRDo1?

Lauraine Bifulco: Don’t let the administrative work take up all of your time. It would be easy to let the day-to-day administrative tasks take over. However, you still need to dedicate time to regular meetings with senior management, be well versed in employment law, appropriately guide senior management on risk, and ensure that you are not solely viewed as the person responsible for processing new hires or terminations. In order to gain a seat at the table with senior management, HR professionals need to be able to speak to the financial impact that HR decisions have on the company.

PIHRA: Technology plays a big role in the success of HR professionals. How can a HRDo1 from a smaller company without access to a decent tech stack achieve the latest industry-standard results?

LB: There is a large variety of technology available now with very low price points. It is up to the HR professional to do the research. Once that is done, then be sure to pitch which technology will work within the company’s budget. Take advantage and leverage the brain share and resources shared within organizations such as SHRM or PIHRA as options. Keep in mind that sometimes, very good reporting can be generated with everyday tools such as Excel.

PIHRA: With daily priorities constantly shifting, how can an HRDo1 manage all their responsibilities efficiently?

LB: It is essential to have a time or project management system in place. In this system, you must hard calendar in time for strategic projects and meetings with senior management. Then time you spend on administrative tasks can easily expand to take up all of your hours. You must set aside a time specifically to work on other initiatives so that you can achieve both long term and short term success.

PIHRA: What are the signs that indicate it’s time to outsource some of an HRDo1’s work?

LB: If you find that your handbook has not been updated in over two years, or if your job descriptions start to have dust on them, those are signs. If your to-do list consistently gets longer rather than shorter, then that’s a sign. If you ever get to the point where you simply don’t have the time to keep on top of new laws and trends in the industry, then it’s time to consider outsourcing.
