Back to School and Back to Basics - Properly Compensating Salaried and Hourly Employees in California

The first portion of the presentation will cover the main “exemptions” for salaried employees, including the criteria for classifying an employee as exempt. Zander will also address the upcoming changes to the Fair Labor Standards Act, including the impact that those changes and that California’s increasing minimum wage will have on the salaries paid to exempt employees over the next several years. The second portion of the presentation will address compensation for hourly employees, including strategies for avoiding common mistakes made by employers, including issues related to the calculation of the hourly rate and final wages to separating employees.

Alexander "Zander" Chemers, Ogletree Deakins

Alexander “Zander” Chemers is an associate in the Los Angeles office of Ogletree Deakins. Zander has defended employers against discrimination, harassment, retaliation, wrongful termination, and failure to accommodate claims. Zander also has significant experience defending employers against wage-and-hour claims, ranging from single plaintiff administrative proceedings to class actions involving thousands of putative class members. He has dealt with a wide range of wage-and-hour claims, including minimum wage and overtime, regular rate, meal periods and rest breaks, and business expenses.

Zander’s practice has involved all aspects of litigation, including presenting oral argument before state and federal courts and drafting dispositive motions. He has extensive deposition experience, including the depositions of plaintiffs, fact witnesses, experts, and persons most knowledgeable. He also has expertise reviewing and analyzing data sets and has worked extensively with outside experts. In addition to his litigation practice, Zander has counseled employers regarding compliance with the California Labor Code and Fair Labor Standards Act.

Zander received his J.D. from the UCLA School of Law in 2008. Following law school, Zander spent a year clerking for the Honorable Ancer L. Haggerty, Chief Judge for the District of Oregon. Prior to joining Ogletree Deakins, Zander spent six years practicing employment law at a national law firm.
