Each year, the list of wacky employment-related cases seems to surpass the last—and 2018 did not disappoint. A look at some of the most off-the-wall employment law developments of the past year. While the entertainment value is high, there is a learning (and therapeutic) component to examining the mistakes of others and learning how we can protect our organizations from outlandish claims brought by workers.

Mr. Joseph Clees is an equity shareholder with Ogletree Deakins, an employment law firm with over 850 employment lawyers worldwide. He practices in the firm’s Phoenix and Torrance offices. Mr. Clees represents employers throughout the United States in employment litigation and counseling. He has served in a variety of firm leadership roles, including as a member of Ogletree’s Board of Directors. Before Ogletree, he was the leader of the international employment practice at Bryan Cave.
Mr. Clees has been singled out by Chambers USA America’s Leading Lawyers as one of the top labor and employment lawyers in the country for many years and as a Chambers USA Top Leader in his Field. Mr. Clees has been honored as one of the “100 Most Powerful Employment Lawyers in America” by HR Executive magazine annually from 2009-2018. In 2013, he was selected as “Phoenix Lawyer of the Year” for Employment Law/Management and again for Labor Law/Management in 2017. In 2014, he was named a Fellow in The College of Labor and Employment Lawyers. He has also been recognized as one of the “Best Lawyers in America” from 2006 to 2019 and as a “Southwest Super Lawyer” from 2007 – 2019.
