The Future of HR is Here

SHRM Certification is the driving force behind effective business outcomes and talent management for HR professionals across industries, sectors and organization size.

Based upon the widely regarded evidence-based SHRM Competency Model, the SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP certifications leverage core competencies needed for HR success in the global business community.

6 Reasons Why You Should Pursue SHRM-CP® or SHRM-SCP® Certification

  1. The SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP credentials are state of-the-art certifications offered by the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), the world’s largest HR membership organization and the industry leader in HR professional development.

For more than 60 years, SHRM has supported more than 100,000 employers representing 140 million employees worldwide.

  2. The SHRM certification exams test your knowledge AND how you use that knowledge to demonstrate your proficiency as a business leader.

  3. The SHRM certification program was created to meet the needs of employers worldwide, driving business through the globally recognized competencies for HR professionals around the world. This is achieved through critical thinking, practical application and real-world experience.

  4. Over 90,000 HR professionals have earned their SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP. To date, more than 4,500 employers are seeking SHRM credential holders every month. This includes Fortune 500 organizations from every sector and industry.

  5. SHRM’s recertification program provides a broad scope of eligible recertification activities, allowing you to determine your professional development needs based on your specific career path.

  6. SHRM certifications directly link to on-the-job scenarios and realistic work situations, making them the most relevant certifications available for HR professionals. Over 60 percent of examinees say the SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP exams are more job relevant than any other HR certification.

The HRM Body of Competency and Knowledge (SHRM BoCK™), draws heavily on the SHRM Competency Model. The SHRM BoCK documents the HR Behavioral Competencies and Knowledge Domains tested on the SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP certification exams. The SHRM BoCK is also the common framework for item writers developing questions and individuals developing exam preparation materials. SHRM operates exam development and study material development as separate, independent functions, and observes a strict firewall between these activities to protect the integrity and credibility of the certification exams.

Selecting the Right Exam

You have made the important decision to pursue SHRM certification. Congratulations! Now you must decide whether to apply for the SHRM-CP or the SHRM-SCP exam.

Even if you are eligible to sit for the SHRM-SCP exam, you may still choose to pursue the SHRM-CP. This certification is designed for HR professionals who are engaged primarily in an operational role—implementing policies, serving as the HR point of contact for staff and stakeholders, and/or performing day-to-day HR functions. If this is your focus, the SHRM-CP is likely your best option.

The SHRM-SCP certification is designed for HR professionals at a senior level who operate primarily in a strategic role—developing policies and strategies, overseeing the execution of HR operations, analyzing performance metrics, and/or contributing to the alignment of HR strategies to organizational goals.

One approach to selecting the right exam is to read the SHRM BoCK and assess which responsibility statements and key behaviors represent the work you perform on a daily basis. If your daily work most resembles key responsibilities listed for advanced professionals, then we suggest applying for the SHRM-SCP exam. If your daily work most resembles key responsibilities listed for all professionals, then we suggest registering for the SHRM-CP exam.

3-year recertification period.
The recertification period begins the date that a candidate takes and passes the exam.
The recertification period ends on the last day of a credential holder’s birth month, at least 3 years from the date the candidate becomes certified.
During the first recertification period, some credential holders may have a slightly longer period.

Required Number of Credits
60 professional development credits (PDC)

Qualifying Recertification Activities
All activities must be related to human resource topic areas or related competencies consistent with the areas outlined in the Body of Competency and Knowledge (BoCK).
